What Are Natural Shampoo Bars and Why You Need Them in Your Life

Natural shampoo bars are special soaps formulated to cleanse, nourish and moisturise your scalp and leave your hair soft, shiny and healthy. They contain oils, essential oils and botanicals especially chosen to benefit different hair types

Although shampoo bars may seem like new, trend, they are the traditional way of washing your hair (before liquid detergents became popular in the 1940s).

What are the benefits of natural solid shampoos?

Natural shampoo bars have many benefits over liquid shampoos and detergent-based shampoo bars, both for your wellbeing and that of our planet. They are:

Free from synthetic surfactants and other toxic ingredients:

Unlike liquid shampoos and many commercial shampoo bars, natural shampoo bars are totally natural and free from sulphates, parabens, preservatives, detergents and synthetic surfactants, and other unnecessary ingredients that harm our scalp and our planet!

More economical

Natural shampoo bars last a long time (up to 80 washes) and for many peeps there is no need to shell out for a separate conditioner. Instead you may like to combine them with organic, natural ingredients like a little lemon juice or vinegar diluted in water to smooth down your hair's "pores" after washing and leave it soft, shiny and tangle free.

Ideal for travel:

Natural shampoo bars are a traveler's best friend, preventing unwanted spills and saving space in your suitcase. Not only do our bars double for both soap and shampoo but they are also ideal for washing clothes and dishes at a pinch.  You can even carry them on the plane.

Environment friendly:

Natural shampoo bars help reduce our overall environmental impact. Not only are they biodegradable but they also the eliminate plastic bottles associated with shampoos, conditioners, shower gel and hand wash. And because they are completely natural, you can be sure that there are no toxic synthetic ingredients that end up in on our bodies or in our groundwater or oceans. This means they are friendly to to plants, aquatic life and ourselves.

But beware! Not all shampoo bars are created equal. Many shampoo bars are made with detergents, surfactants and other synthetic ingredients posing the same risk to you and the planet as liquid shampoos!

How to choose a solid shampoo?

To choose the most natural and friendly shampoo for your hair and the environment, look for:

  • Cold-pressed shampoo soaps made in small batches and hand-cut
  • Special ingredients for your hair such as oils and butter to moisturise and nourish the scalp (I love shea butter), pure essential oils designed for hair growth and shine and scalp health (some of my favourites are peppermint , rosemary, lavender, tea tree and neroli) and botanicals to nourish and heal the scalp (for example calendula, chamomile, lavender, nettle and burdock)
  • A solid shampoo without sulfates, parabens, preservatives, silicones and synthetic surfactants that irritate the skin and harm the environment!

How do you use shampoo bars?

We are all unique and so too is our hair! So just like any new haircare regime, it's a matter of finding the right routine for you.

To give you an idea, here's a rundown on my routine.

I personally wash my hair two to three times a week. I never use the bar directly in my hair but prefer to create a good lather in my hands and use this to massage and wash my scalp thoroughly.

I then rinse off my hair with lots of water, and then a bit of lemon juice (1/4 to 1/2 a lemon) diluted in a bowl of water. This lowers the pH and helps close my hair's pores to leave it soft and shiny.

While I am completely happy with my lemon hair rinse, some of clients prefer a dash apple cidar vinegar, or for a more finished look continue to use a little conditioner in the ends. In this case I would recommend a conditioner free from sulfates and silicones.

A little bit about our soaps and shampoo bars

All our bars are suitable for both hair and body. While some soap-makers like to reserve the best best oils and botanicals only for use in shampoo bars (and charge prices up to 400% higher for them), we feel that your skin, the largest organ in the body, also deserves the best ingredients!

That's why we make our soaps with virgin organic coconut oil, cold pressed first olive oil, organic shea butter, pure essential oils and organic botanicals, carefully chosen for your skin, hair and scalp. They are vegan and free from sulphates, preservatives, mineral and palm oils and their derivatives.

Super rich and creamy with loads of lather, our solid shampoos are made in small batches using recipes developed to clean and condition the scalp and skin naturally, and leave your hair soft, shiny, clean and, above all, healthy.

You can find them here in our online store.
