Rosemary my dear old friend 🌿

brain function headaches memory rosemary

We rented our new home here in Mullumbimby sight unseen so when we arrived and found this rosemary in our backyard, we were unbelievably happy.

Rosemary is one of my favourite plants and our farm in Argentina was full of it! So having a plant here in our backyard is like having an old friend close by!

I find rosemary to be an awesome companion plant who is said to grow best in the garden of strong-willed women! It’s also extremely generous with its culinary and medicinal gifts.

Not only is it delicious with an exquisite aroma (that deters insects in the garden!), but it is also full of properties for the mind, body and soul, making it one of my favourite ingredients in infusions and natural skincare.

Mental Function

Famous for strengthening brain function, Greek scholar wore rosemary in their hair in ancient times while studying or taking exams to improve memory and concentration. In Hamlet, Ophelia says “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.” And recent studies have supported this traditional use, showing that rosemary improves memory, promotes concentration and even helps patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Haircare

Rosemary has also been used traditionally to prevent hair loss, treat dandruff and promote shiny, beautiful hair. Not only does it stimulate blood flow to the scalp to accelerate growth but it’s also has powerful antimicrobial properties for scalp health. That’s why we include it in our natural shampoo bar, our beard balm and our conditioning hair butter, Citricoco.

But if you have rosemary at home, you can also make a simple hair treatment by preparing a strong tea with the leaves! This can also be used an effective remedy for indigestion (so long as you’re not pregnant) and even as an insect repellent at a pinch.

Joint pain, arthritis and inflammation:

Rosemary is one of the richest sources of antioxidants, and as such, research suggests that a massage, either with infused oil or rosemary essential oil (diluted in a carrier oil) can be effective in decreasing inflammation associated with disorders such as arthritis. Similarly a  bath with rosemary leaves can bring great relief at the end of a long day!

Rosemary is a beautiful, rustic plant and I'm so happy to have this dear old friend here to accompany us on this new journey! You can find it in many of our herbal products including our head balm, natural deodorant and solid shampoo. 🌿
